Ok, so 100 miles is not all bubbles and cupcakes. Here’s a little tribute to the dark side:
Top 10 Evil Aspects of running 100 miles
#10: Pointing out how much your butt hurts and having everyone agree.
#9: Hearing stories about racers that were unkind to their support people.
#8: Sitting in an ice bath 3 hours after you finished balling your eyes out and squeezing your husbands hand so hard that it reminds you of when you were in labor, except it hurts worse.
#7: Watching your daughter eat it trying to run over to give you a high five and just running by her because you were too stupid to stop, pick her up, and dust her off.
#6: Having diarrhea that is the consistency of water and is dark black.
#5: finding pictures like these in the photo dump
#4: Wanting so badly to go to sleep afterwards but being in too much pain to lay down. Trying to sleep sitting up in a chair only to find that the pain is worse. Giving up on sleep altogether.
#3: Taking the max amount of Advil that the back of the bottle says you can take in 24 hours and begging for more like you are a junkie.
#2: Wondering what happened to the friends you made and then finding out that they dropped out of the race.
#1: Realizing that these are going to hurt for some time.

HOLY CRAP
I hope your bum feels better, your toes are less sore and your rrhea is gone.
Hey, next time you are in that much pain, take advil and tylenol together. The combo is as potent as narcotic pain relievers without all the woozy side effects. Add the to you little bank of knowledge for the future.
Wow that looks painful!!
Damn! That looks like it really hurts!
Hey, after starting 5 – 100 mile races (finishing 3) believe it or not it does get better. your recovery gets faster & usually you can pop the blister under your toenail then it will fall off. Then you can make a pretty necklace out of your toenails.
The dark side of 100 miles????? What’s the good side of 100 miles???????
OUCH! That toe looks painful! I hope recovery is going well.
You are so hard core. I’m so impressed by your bad-assness!
You’re awesome, Sonja.
Such an inspiration!
I forwarded this to my friend who is doing his first 100 this summer! Can’t wait to see his reaction!
Great job!
Ummmm, I think I can dig up some Percocet or something around my house… Just sayin’…
I can only imagine the pain. I am sorry. However, you have inspired thousands of women and men out there with your story. May I ask, how long did the diarrhea go? I hope you are not suffering from too much pain.
diarrhea was only during the race and only when I would eat solid food. The minute I stopped running…it stopped as well.
I have really enjoyed following your blog the last couple of months as you prepped for Moab, but these last 2 posts have been the best.
The “my butt hurts” photo is a classic. I laugh every time I see it.
Sonja rawks. That’s all I can say!
Okay–wow–yikes!I agree you can alternate doeses of Advil and Tylenol a pharmacist or doc will tell you how to do this safely and effectively. But I really felt for you on #7. But you had to keep moving forward…you had to keep those feet moving. Love on your daughter now, lots!
Congratulations Sonja!
I saw your clip on Goal0 Facebook page. You are a strong runner! I liked your attitude throughout the run.
Cheers!
Hmmm. Lost of people who feel sorry for you? Hmmmm. I guess that isn’t what I was thinking…more like you ARE A FREAKING ROCK STAR AND I AM SO PROUD OF YOU FOR EDURING! Toenails schmonails! That’s why you have 10 after all! You have an amazing gift in your legs, butt, heart and brain! Keep those lil sausages on the bike and you will be fine! Love ya! Bethie
You hammered! Congratulations. Yep, those are 10 true things about running 100 miles. I remember trying to sleep in a recliner for 2 days after my first 100. I’m currently trying to get psyched up for the San Diego 100 and this list is perfect. I’m super excited now.
