A Bike Accident

We drove into the garage with the bikes on top of the car today. Troy’s bike is totaled, he cracked and bent (read: mangled) his frame. My fork was broken off, but the frame is intact. The sunroof of the car was shattered. The two bike racks were totaled. The rack bars on top of the Subaru are also totaled. It’s been a fun afternoon.

We are trying to be light hearted about it, but we catch ourselves every once in awhile with a sour look on our face as the reality seeps back in. Being down about it doesn’t help anything, and it’s not like anyone was hurt in the process. Still, it’s hard to see the busted up bike carnage that resulted.

Steve is ordering a new fork for me which will be overnighted on Monday, so we should be able to get my bike up and running again before we leave for Florida. Troy’s bike will have to wait a little longer. Unfortunately I think we will just need to get him a completely new bike. Looks like the car will be covered by insurance, subject to our deductible of course. Happy times!

Ahh, the joys of endurance sports.

  1. Hope your aerobars weren’t affected? Also, just brainstorming, but maybe the next rack should be on the back? do you have a hitch? Hang in there!

  2. Definitely no top of the car rack for me! I would totally do something like that. It would take a while, but when I least expected it, carnage.
Hmmm, The other option is to build a really tall garage with extra tall garage doors?

  3. Doh. I feel your pain, seeing as how I have done the same thing myself. Luckily, my bike wasn’t hurt nearly as badly as yours were…although my shifters still need some help! And my rack even survived although I needed a new strap. So, don’t feel too bad (although it definitely sucks!), you are certainly not the first ones to suffer that particular brain fart!

The good news is that I haven’t done it again since, and I’m pretty sure I never will!

  4. Aaah, yes, yesterday was a good day for bikes. Ben rode his carbon bike into Boulder and Tana & I met him up there. We were pulling into a parking garage so that we could go to the farmer’s market when we heard the most nauseating noise. Yes ladies & gentlemen, Ben’s bike got ripped off the top of my car. The whole rack came of with it and it all landed behind my car. The bike is pretty much okay, thankfully. The seat got bent up where it got hooked on the clearance bar, a new one is already on order as Ben’s first duathlon is the weekend in NM. The way the bike landed it torqued one of the shifters out of position, but that was easily fixed. We were fortunate to have an aftermarket Yakima rack and the weak point was the Q-Tower mounts, which is why the whole thing popped off and Ben was accelerating up the garage ramp so the whole thing cleared my car without a scratch. We still can’t believe it. Ben moved the bike & rack out of the way and I moved the car and parked it on the street. We put everything back on top of the car and headed off to the market. Right as we were getting back to the car, a person of parking meter persuasion stopped and it looked like she was going to give us a parking ticket. I unlocked the car and she asked if that was our car and if we were leaving. That is when I looked up and saw the 10 minute loading zone no parking sign. Whoops! We were so unnerved about the bike, neither of us even noticed where we had parked the car. It was just one of those days yesterday. Was Annie in the car with you and if so, is she okay?

  5. ugh – that sound and realization when the bike hits is enough to make your stomach turn upside down and inside out. Thankfully it was “only” bikes and no one was hurt.

  6. Yup, nobody was hurt! The sunroof shattered, but the cover was up, so not glass came in the car. Fun times. We are totally getting a hitch and a hitch mounted rack. This is the third time Troy has driven the bikes into things in 9 months. He’s developing a pattern, so we need to do something about it! Poor guy, he feels horrible!

  7. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Third time’s the charm!
I pulled into my car port in college with my new Serotta mtb on top. I heard the beginning of carnage, and stopped. The Flite ti saddle had scuffs on the back for years as a reminder…

  9. Little update…the insurance expert that we keep on retainer at home (AKA Troy) made some calls and our auto insurance is going to cover the carnage… including the bikes! We just have to file one claim for the car and one for the bikes, and then pay two deductibles. But we should be able to get Troy’s bike replaced for much less than the purchase of a new one. My fork will be included and so will the bike racks we think! The car damage will obviously get fixed as well!
Another update… apparently the bikes are covered under our renters insurance, not the auto insurance…because it happened at home. Yea for renting!
